Part-time teachers observe fast
The members of the All Part-Time Special Teachers’
Association (APSTA) observed a day’s hunger strike in front of the
Collectorate here on Friday.
They demanded proper
disbursement of wages within a timeframe, relief to the families of the
part-time teachers who died in accidents, payment of wages that were
withheld for the months of September and October 2012 and April 2013.
State
treasurer of the Association C. Senthil Kumar, who led the agitation,
said that the government had appointed part-time teachers, numbering
16,549, on a contract basis. They were entitled to a monthly wages of
Rs. 5,000.
They were expected to sign attendance for
three half days in a week. But, in practice, they were made to remain in
the schools through the day. The Association also asked for a committee
to monitor the disbursement of wages.
